Award recognizes Harman for his dedication to balanced civil justice reform
SACRAMENTO - The Civil Justice Association of California (CJAC) today announced that State Senator Tom Harman (35th District) is a recipient of the Civil Justice Leadership Award for his work in the 2006-2007 legislative session.
“Senator Harman’s commitment to balance and fairness in California’s civil justice system is good for consumers, taxpayers, and businesses of all kinds,” said John H. Sullivan, the association’s President.
During the legislative session, Senator Harman authored legislation to reign in runaway punitive damage awards and fought valiantly to stop a trial-lawyer-sponsored end run scheme to artificially inflate damages in certain injury cases.
“I am honored to have received this very prestigious award from one of the state’s leaders championing tort reform,” stated Harman. “Having practiced law for over thirty years prior to being elected to the Legislature, I have come to this position intimately familiar with the abuses that exist within our judicial system. I remain committed to combating this abuse and look forward to continuing to work with the Civil Justice Association toward this common goal.”
Senator Harman represents the 35th Senate District which includes the cities of Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Rossmoor, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Irvine, Cypress, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Laguna Beach, Dana Point and portions of Buena Park, Garden Grove, Santa Ana and Westminster.
