Plaintiffs' Lawyers Campaign Spending
Each election season, personal injury and other plaintiff’s lawyers pour thousands of dollars into the campaign coffers of their favored candidates for legislative or statewide office.
During the past decade, CJAC has tracked donations from plaintiff’s lawyers through the California Secretary of State’s web site and made the results public. The lawyers have spent millions of dollars trying to elect specific representatives to public office.
Since the 1999-2000 election cycle, candidates have received $33.5 million from personal injury lawyers, their firms, and their candidate contribution and independent expenditure committees. In the 2007-08 election cycle, personal injury and other plaintiff’s lawyers spent more than $4.1 million in direct contributions and trial-lawyer controlled political action committees.
